The Dendrological Garden Průhonice is an arboretum and botanical garden. The axis of the garden is the valley of the Černý Brook with a water cascade starting from the Černý Pond, which together with the northern part of the garden is included in the Botič - Milíčov Nature Park. The Dendrological Garden is a research and experimental workplace of the Silva Tarouca Research Institute for Landscape and Ornamental Horticulture, a public research institution.

It was founded for the purpose of concentrating and preserving plant collections, their documentation and study, with an emphasis on the use of individual species in horticultural and landscape creation. With its activities in the field of taxonomy, plant protection, education and enlightenment, it fulfills the mission of a classic botanical garden, which it also expands with research activities in the wider sphere of environmental creation.

The basis of the present form of the garden was created thanks to the extraordinary efforts of a number of employees of the research institute in the mid-seventies of the 20th century, when the local areas once again began to serve as an experimental workplace for horticultural and landscape research.

The arrangement of the Dendrological Garden and the local collections responded to the needs of the time for the study and preservation of gene pools of ornamental plants, experimentation and verification of new planting technologies. The greatest development of the garden took place in the second half of the eighties.

In 1991, the area was opened to the public, thanks also to the understanding of the owners of the land on which part of the garden is located. The opening of the garden created a need to expand the range of educational and educational activities for visitors.

The Dendrological Garden continues the legacy of Count Arnošt Emanuel Silva Tarouca, the founder of the Próhonice Park and the first president of the Dendrological Society for the Support of Tree Science and Garden Art in Austria-Hungary, respectively. The Czechoslovak Dendrological Society, thus declaring itself to a more than century-old tradition.

The dendrological garden covers an area of 72.8 hectares and contains almost 10,000 taxa of plants. Among the most important local collections are the collection of rhododendrons, ornamental apple trees, lilacs and boxwoods, which are the richest in the Czech Republic. A unique collection of climbing, orchard and old varieties of roses is grown here. There are also numerous collections of pines and spruces. Tree plantings are accompanied by extensive plantings of perennials and bulbs.
