There are two historical opinions on the meaning of the name of the Sázava river meandering through the Posázaví area as a blue thread. One is derived from Celtic sath-ava meaning a river flowing throughout pine-wood, the other one is then from Slavic sad-jati and could be translated as river sázavá, settling down, bringing a lot of deposits with. The fact that the river really brings a lot of deposit as for instance clay and sands can be seen until today.
The region around the river became a famous tourism region already in the beginning of the 20est century. It has satisfied the visitors´ needs concerning peace, beautiful nature and a lot of experience. Tramping and watermanship have become a phenomenon of this area.
Tramping was a civic folk movement inspired by the Wood Wisdom League or woodcraft, scouting, statwarts movement and American Wild West.
First Czech tramps were older scouts that were already not satisfied with a scout organisation strict order but they had a relationship to nature and romance. It was during the World War I. The name tramp was not used yet; these people were called wild scouts.
Tramps explored step by step the nature especially in the southern surrounding of Prague, mainly in the basins of the Vltava and Sázava rivers. Also first settlements arose in the basins of these rivers following the example of settling down the West. These cottage settlements were changed into recreational background for weekend stays during the course of time.
Canoes and kayaks started occurring on the Sázava river at the same time as the cottage settlements. You can enjoy the water tourism on our river to full extent.
