Podlesí Nature Reserve

The Podlesí Nature Reserve is located in the first zone of the Blaník Protected Landscape Area near the village of Louňovice pod Blaníkem. It boasts two ponds and surrounding wetland meadows. Particularly valuable is the peat-bog meadow abundant with small springs above the Velký Býkovický Pond, which represents a unique example of a species-rich wildflower meadow; our countryside once boasted dozens of such meadows. The purple blossoms of the endangered Czech Orchid - Orchis majalis (Dactylorhiza majalis) - will attract your attention during May and June. Several hundreds of these flowers grow in the Podlesí Reserve. The fluffy white tuft comas are typical for the common cotton-grass and help to distribute its seeds on the wind into the surroundings. The dampest parts are overgrown by the buckbean, yellow march marigold and crowfoot. An experienced observer can find as many as fourteen types of sedge here. The grass on the meadows needs to be scythed regularly and it is also necessary to look after the new man-made pools that would otherwise become overgrown with horsetail. Numerous families of green frog live here and have offspring every year. For its unique natural significance the Podlesí Nature Reserve has been listed in the National Register of Significant European Localities under the Natura 2000 Scheme.
