Džbány-Žebrák Nature Reserve

The Džbány-Žebrák Nature Park is situated in the picturesque landscape between Líšno and Votice, whose ruggedness and extensive forested areas resemble a submontane region. Civilisation has not yet found and affected the local landscape; on the steep hills, mixed forests alternate with meadows abundant with springs and game refuges. The Nature Park is a safe haven for a large number of endangered animals, and rare types of plants grow here as well. The Kališťská and Budenínská meadows are among the most valuable. You can see hundreds of blossoming Czech Orchid - Orchis majalis (Dactylorhiza majalis) - in this significant botanical locality every year. The buckbean, a small carnivorous plant called bladderwort, and dozens of other types of plants and flowers grow in the wetland areas of the territory. The critically endangered corncrake occupies meadows located in the central part. The system of meadows and game shelters is gradually replaced by forests further on. You can find the ruins of an old gamekeeper’s lodge at the edge of the forests; its history dates as far back as the 17th century. Goshawks nest in the treetops of the original beech forest that surrounds its stony walls. A wild and rocky valley can be found east of the gamekeeper’s lodge. The steep rocks and the inaccessibility of the location well suit the stock owls, who build their nests here.
